What are kiln-dried logs?

Kiln-dried logs are hardwood logs dried in a heated kiln instead of being left to season outdoors. Air-drying takes a year or two, longer for oak; a kiln gets logs below 20% moisture in days. Dry logs light easily, burn hotter and make far less smoke, which is better for your stove, your chimney and your neighbours. Every supplier we list is Ready to Burn certified, which means their logs are tested at under 20% moisture. In England, wood sold in loads under 2m³ has to carry this certification.

How we compare prices

Crates come in different sizes and suppliers describe them differently, so we convert every product to a price per loose cubic metre (£/loose m³). "Loose" means logs tipped into a crate rather than neatly stacked; the same logs stacked take up roughly 40% less space. Converting everything to one unit means a 1.2m³ crate and a 3m³ crate can be compared fairly. How we gather prices explains the details.

Bulk or standard load?

Bulk loads (over 1.7 loose m³) are usually cheaper per cubic metre; the bulk saving column above shows today's difference for each species. Which species should you buy?

Birch and alder light quickest. Oak, beech and hornbeam burn longest. Ash is an easy all-rounder, and a mixed hardwood crate gives you some of each. When are logs cheapest?

In the years we've tracked, kiln-dried log prices have been lowest in summer and highest through late autumn and winter, when demand peaks. If you can wait, price alerts tell you when prices drop and when the summer low arrives.
