Is ash good firewood?

Yes, it has one of the best reputations of any firewood. Ash strikes a rare balance: dense enough for good heat and a decent burn time, but it lights more readily than oak or hornbeam. It burns with a steady, even flame, little smoke and few sparks. Kiln-dried ash is consistently dry, and Ready to Burn certified logs are under 20% moisture.

Who ash suits

Ash suits almost any stove or open fire, and anyone who wants one wood that does everything: lights easily, burns steadily and gives good heat without much fuss. It's a good single choice if you'd rather not mix species.

Getting good value on ash logs

Ash is usually at or near the top of our tracker per loose m³, so it's worth checking the alternatives if you're flexible. Beech burns longer for a similar or lower price, though it's harder to light.
